DSD Sage MAS 90 Tech Tip 31 - Tech Tip: Solving Client Server Firewall Issues

Many of our users are currently installing Microsoft Updates to help combat viruses and worms.  Some users find that after installing the Microsoft Updates they are unable to launch (or get into) Sage MAS 200. When they attempt to start Sage MAS 200 (log on) they get a blank screen, or the workstation startup icon keeps “pinging” the server.  Here is one troubleshooting suggestion.

In order for Sage MAS 200 to work, your PC must be able to “talk” with your server. Your server must also be able to “talk” with your PC. If the two pieces are unable to communicate,Sage MAS 200 will not work.  To troubleshoot you will want to open a command prompt on your PC and ping the server. (If you don’t know the IP address for your server, you will find it in the Workstation’s ..\Mas90\Home\Launcher folder in the Sota.ini file.)  Then go to the server, and ping your PC.  (If you do not know the IP address of your PC, get to the command prompt and type IPCONFIG. Your IP address will display on your screen.) If you cannot ping the server you have a network problem. Call our IT department for additional network assistance.

If you are able to ping the server, but the server is unable to ping the PC, your firewall may be preventing the connection. On a Windows XP workstation, the problem is most likely the XP’s local firewall has been turned on by the Microsoft Windows updates. For Windows XP, Right Click on “My Network Places” to get to the properties screen.

Select your local area connection.  Then right click and get to the properties:

Go to the Advanced Tab.  Make certain that the Internet Connection Firewall box is unchecked.

Un-checking the box should allow the server to communicate with the PC. You should now be able to launch Sage MAS 200.  If you are still unable to launch Sage MAS 200, call us for assistance.
