Windows XP Service Pack 2 Supported for MAS 90 and MAS 200

DSD MAS90 Tech Tip 38 - Windows XP Service Pack 2 supported on MAS 3.71 and MAS 4.0

by Ken Phillips

On September 2, 2004, Sage Software released new MAS 90 and MAS 200 Supported Platform Matrix including support for the Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Windows XP SP2 is supported with MAS 90, MAS 200, and MAS 200 SQL 3.71 and higher. Prior versions have not been tested, and are not supported with SP2.

You may get a “Windows Security Alert. Windows Firewall has blocked some features of this program. Do you want to keep blocking this program?” when starting MAS 200 3.71 from Windows XP after installing SP2. This message results when the Windows XP Firewall has been enabled on the workstation. This feature is enabled by default after installing the Windows Service Pack 2.

Click ‘Unblock’ to close the message, and start MAS 200.

This issue does not effect MAS 200 4.0, or any version of MAS 90.

The MAS 200 splash screen will hang if anything other than 'Unblock' is selected. The workstation will continuously try to start MAS 200 even though the program is blocked. Open Task Manager and choose End Task on the MAS90DLG.EXE task and PVXWIN32.EXE task.
If the 'Keep Blocking' option was selected, then the Windows Security Alert will no longer appear but MAS 200 will unsuccessfully continue attempting to start each time. After ending the MAS90DLG.EXE and PVXWIN32.EXE tasks, manually add 'ProvideX for Windows' as an Exception to the Windows Firewall. To do this:

1. Start the Windows Firewall application.
2. Select the 'Exceptions' tab.
3. If "ProvideX for Windows" or "Pvxwin32.exe" appear, select (check) the checkbox to add it as an exception.
4. If "ProvideX for Windows" or pvxwin32.exe do not appear, then they are not being blocked. Perform either of the following:

a) Start MAS 200 normally and select 'Unblock' when prompted.
b) Manually add the exception to the firewall:

5. Click 'Add Program' on the 'Exceptions' tab and browse to and select the workstation's local ..\Mas90\Home\PVXWIN32.EXE.
Note: Do not add the Pvxwin32.exe located in the the server's ..\Mas90\Home\ folder.

Up Close and Personal

by Doug Deane, President of DSD

As I write this, I'm waiting to board a jet bound for Atlanta, which I'm told will be hit with the aftermath of hurricane Frances, and in a few days hurricane Ivan. It sure is great to be living in Southern California! I wouldn't trade our earthquakes for even one hurricane.

I'm going to Atlanta for an important reason - to attend the Best Leadership Alumni conference. It is four days worth of great product and management information, packed into two days. Ron Verni, the President of Sage Software, will be the featured speaker and I'm sure that he'll give us a taste of what's coming down the pike in the near future.

We too have commitments to growth and development here at DSD - to excellence and continuous improvement in everything we do. An important part of this commitment includes staff training - in the technical aspects of our jobs, as well as in improving communication with our customers. At least two of our staff will be attending courses this month, so please bear with us if our response times are not as immediate as you've come to expect. By taking the time to attend this training, we'll be better able to help you create business system that are flexible enough to meet your current AND your future needs.

A Changing of the Guard - CRM Professional Services

It is with deep regrets that we announce the departure of Mike Mahoney from the Professional Services team effective September 10th, 2004. Mike has been with DSD for over four years and has contributed significantly to the development of a successful CRM practice here at DSD. His presence here will be missed and we hope you'll join us in wishing him the best in all his pursuits.

On the upside, we'd like to welcome John Maul as the new CRM Consultant to the Professional Services team. Effective September 8th, John will take up the reigns on the CRM practice for DSD. With his solid background in SQL and VB programming, many years of implementation experience and a demonstrated strength with Crystal Reports, John will certainly be an asset to the team. John also holds a Project Management certification from UC Berkley and we'll be taxing his project management expertise as we grow in the coming months and years.

Client Assessments

Keeping up to date with the latest software, adequately training staff and utilizing program enhancements to address specific business issues can have a tremendous impact on your bottom line.

We wanted to let you know that our Account Management team is initiating a program to contact all clients with current Software Maintenance Plans, (SMPs) to confirm the details of your account record and to schedule a free on-site Client Assessment. In this assessment, an associate from DSD Business Systems will work with you, using the available data utilities to help prepare your system for future upgrades . We’ll review your current processes and tasks for opportunities to increase efficiency and profitability with new solutions or capabilities. After we assess your system, we will provide you with a written system status report along with any recommendations for changes that will benefit your company.

Tech Tips

MAS90 and MAS200 Require a Share Point on your Server

by Jennifer Phillips

When installing MAS90 or MAS200 it is important that you set up a share point at a parent directory above the MAS90 folder. Do not create the share directly at the MAS90 folder. Failure to set up the share point, or failure on the workstations to correctly map the drive to this share point may cause problems with third party applications such as Crystal Reports or FRx.

Both the Installation and Administration Guide – MAS90 and Installation and Administration Guide – MAS200 document the need for this share point.

“To run the Workstation Setup program from the installation directory of a MAS200 Server, use Windows Explorer to attach to the server share point where MAS200 is installed and select the MAS90\WKSETUP directory. Double-click AUTORUN.EXE to run the Workstation Setup program. It takes the Workstation Setup Program a few moments to launch.

If you do not see the MAS90 folder in Windows Explorer , then the share point was set up to be the MAS90 folder. The share point must be set up to a parent folder above MAS90. Click Exit and cancel the Workstation Setup program.”
Installation and Administration Guide – MAS200, pp.23-23.

“At the server, create a share at a parent directory above the MAS90 folder. Do not create the share directly at the MAS90 folder. Every workstation will be required to map a drive to this share point.”
Installation and Administration Guide – MAS90, p. 35.

Workstations that are not mapped correctly to the share point above the MAS90 folder may experience:

Error messages - "The Crystal RPT file for ###-XXX does not exist. The default form will be used".

Alternate Directory Maintenance fails to work.

Extended Solutions do not install correctly.
