Best Advanced Notice of Support Discontinuation

This notice addresses two specific issues: 1. Desktop operating system retirement, and 2. The discontinuation of support for SQL Server 7.0 Desktop operating system retirement • Windows 98 • Windows 98 Second Edition • Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Microsoft will obsolete these desktop operating system products as of June 30, 2003.

click for detailed information

In order to give our customers as much time as possible to upgrade their desktops to current operating systems, Best will discontinue support for these products six months after Microsoft, on December 31, 2003. This is necessary to provide the highest-quality support possible, and to enable us to take advantage of new features and benefits of modern operating systems. If you have desktop computers that run any of these products, we recommend they upgrade those systems to the latest version of Microsoft desktop operating systems for business, which is currently Windows XP Professional. Please note that while Best supports Windows XP Home, its feature set is not designed for business applications, and is not recommended; customers running Windows Millennium Edition (ME) should consider upgrading as well for the same reasons.

It’s also important to take the hardware requirements of newer operating systems into account when upgrading; the hardware requirements for Windows XP are significantly higher than those for Windows 95. Please refer to the current Supported Platform Matrix on the Partner File Center for details. SQL Server 7.0 retirement Following the 4.0 release of MAS 200 for SQL Server next year, SQL Server 2000 will be required. This is to allow Best to leverage features not available in SQL Server 7.0. MAS 200 for SQL Server customers should be certain to run the latest version of SQL Server so to take full advantage of the many new features that will be available in version 4.0.

The Behaviors and Tools of Today's Hackers

Excerpted from Symantec.com

These days, it doesn't take a computer expert to become a hacker. There are over 30,000 hacking-oriented sites on the Internet, offering easy to use click-and-hack programs and scripts for anyone to download. These easily accessible hacking tools have opened the door for a multitude of new exploits.

The first big-name hackers include Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds, all now highly recognizable names behind many of the computer technologies used today. These early hackers had a love of technology and a compelling need to know how it all worked, and their goal was to push programs beyond what they were designed to do. Back then, the word "hacker" didn't have the negative connotation it has today. The original hacker ethic, rooted out of simple curiosity and a need to be challenged, appears to be dead.

The objectives of early hackers are a far cry from the goals of today's hacker. The motivation of the new breed of hackers appears not to be curiosity, or a hunger for knowledge, as it used to be. Instead, most of today's hackers are driven by greed, power, revenge, or some other malicious intent, treating hacking as a game or sport, employing the tools that are readily available via the Internet.

This article conveys a good basic understanding of the modern computer security environment. Please take the time to follow the link below and learn how to protect your company's data.
